Raj K. Sinha, M.D., Ph.D. has a results-oriented personality.

Which explains, simply and elegantly, why he decided to specialize in orthopedics. He relocated to the Coachella Valley in 2003 and specializes in hip and knee replacement surgery.

"When I was in medical school it was clear that orthopedic surgeons were able to do tremendous things to get people back to active lifestyles." According to Dr. Sinha, the success rate in orthopedics continues to climb at a rapid clip. "We are in a very exciting period of development in orthopedics right now," he claims. "More and more, we are finding ways to do things for patients that we only dreamt about decades ago."

He is helping to realize those dreams with cutting-edge surgery and research in the areas of bone-metal interaction, bone regeneration and robotic surgery. For example, he was the first in the Coachella Valley and one of the first surgeons in the world to perform Makoplasty, a robotic arm assisted partial knee replacement. He has helped to design hip and knee replacement components, including one of the most popular hip replacement stems in the world.

His research has been published in leading journals, and he has received multiple awards, including a Clinician Scientist Grant from the National Institutes of Health (1993), the National Orthopedic Surgery Fellows Foundation Research Grant (1996), the International Society for Technology and Arthroplasty Hap Paul Award (1997), a Zimmer Research Grant , the Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Initiative Grant, the 2003 Harcum Award, and the Arthritis Foundation Commitment to Excellence Award (2009).

Dr. Sinha earned his Medical Degree from Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, completing his internship in the Department of Surgery at Abington Memorial Hospital in Abington, PA. During his residency within the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University, he pursued his Ph.D. at the Thomas Jefferson University College of Graduate Studies, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Most recently, Dr. Sinha served as Director of the Orthopedic Curriculum of the Internal medicine Residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). He was Co-Director of the Ferguson Laboratory and an Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery within the Division of Adult Reconstructive Surgery at UPMC. He remains active in surgeon education, lecturing world wide and organizing surgeon education conferences.

Dr. Sinha is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and a member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, the International Society for Technology in Arthroplasty (ISTA), the Orthopedic Research Society and the American Medical Association. He serves on the board of directors of ISTA and the Foundation for the Advancement of Research in Medicine (FARM).
